Hello,

I have just purchased a Core 2 Duo 2 ghz iMac with 2 gigs RAM, and am considering purchasing either Express or Pro to replace my Roland VS machine. I have also been advised to purchase a separate HDD for audio, but, my very limited understanding of FW is that the two FW ports on my iMac share bandwidth, and am therefore concerned that having an external drive will use up resources for whatever FW audio interface I purchase (I am thinking of a RME Fireface 400).

Is there any basis for this concern, or do I have a lot more reading to do?

Thanks,

Mithrandir

@ Mithrandir, Well if your streaming samples off the drive and not doing much multitrack recording (simultaneous rec) you should be more than fine. Your audio interface would only be dealing with Stereo playback and possibly one or two "real" audio tracks and or midi.

Having your system drive process its OS, Audio, Sample Streaming, Logic and everything would be far more taxing that handing some work of to an external drive and its shared audio interface.
